Detailed Description: The dynamics of relationships empower my work.
Clay is basic to my relationship with the earth. As a child I'd sit in an eroded pasture playing in the veins of bright red clay. As an adult, comfort comes from spending time in the ceramic studio, up to my elbows in wet clay.
The interplay between working in two different media, clay and paint, gives me the opportunity to explore my subject deeper, transposing successes of one into the other.
Paint is a vehicle that allows me to layer one idea upon another. I am attracted to the surrealist process of taking an idea that exists in space and making a flat surface, rich in a combination of shapes, colors, and textures.
The impetus of my art may happen through a labored orchestration of form and content or through the use of automatism. In my latest work, I use a simplified head shape and a spike as a common motif, representing a generic being experiencing the dynamics of power and danger in our environment.
