Artists Statement
A common bond among ceramists
is that we take clay from the ground and create with our own
aesthetic. We consider what we will contribute to this world.
Using minerals from deep within the earth we formulate our own
palette and we devise methods of firing hoping for the crystallization
of our vision. Sometimes we seek to create a thing of beauty,
a thought provoking comment, a memory, or the desire to touch.
We each create differently and we know when it is right.
These Simple Forms and Stages (Fragments
of Life) were created with porcelain paper-clay slip - testing
the limits of fragility. It was a new direction for me after
twenty-five years - and it was like starting all over. I love
that about clay.
Techniques
Liquid clay was poured over slabs of plaster then picked up as
sheets and manipulated. Some of the forms are high-fired in a
reduction atmosphere, and others are raku-fired. The glass in
the tub is from marbles. Tiles of slip were inlaid into the stage
floors when still damp. Strips of paper-thin clay were cut with
scissors to form the table and chair. I was continually
amazed at the possibilities with this claybody.I found some things
that worked and some that clearly did not - there is always something
new to discover about clay.
