Artists Statement
The idea of function, even
implied gives me all the rhyme and reason that I need to create
these forms. Age old disputes of art verses craft... seemingly
things that have function and are well crafted are not seen as
art. With that said, I focus on making functional forms that
are well crafted, sometimes much too large to actually use, sometimes
just too silly or inconvenient but still all forms fit a purpose
and are usually easily read. The "Unbelievably Functional"
series are teapots that are completely self serving, teapot and
drinking vessel all part of one entity that can be separated
for use. This is part of a personal vocabulary that alludes to
the vessel as an influence or parent form and the drinking vessel
as a child form. The parent form receives, stores and pours it's
contents and the child form receives, alters and delivers those
same contents... hot water, tea ...or influence to a personality.
