Artists Statement
Death is the mirror, which
reflects the true meaning of life. It is the moment of truth.
The time when we must, face ourselves, alone and without deceit.
Contemplation on death is the antidote to the mesmerizing distractions
of this life. It helps us to set our priorities.
Quote
The abbot was asked "How do you polish the heart? How do
you remove all the roughness and the debris from the heart?"
He replied, "By remembrance of God and much thought on death."
Techniques
Pieces were made from press molds of bones and screws. They were
then cut and assembled. Sometimes stainless steel welding rods
were cut and used as "pins" to give structual support.
Pieces were then fired to cone 05.
A crackle slip was applied and the pieces were refired. This was continued until the surface was acceptable. Then stains and oxides were applied and sponged off until acceptable. A wash of matt clear glaze was applied to slip/stain areas. Finally the metallic glaze was applied to all "metal" parts and then the pieces were fired to either cone 05 or cone 6.
