Default Cone five glaze on cone 10 glaze

Hi, I'm relitively new to the ceramic world, but love it all ready. I've had a potters wheel now sence christmas last year. I've learnt a great deal,But still have ?'s. I use a Dillo white clay that is very close to Porcelin but more elastic. It has a shrinkage or 7%. I recently bought some cone 5 glazes by mistake on their part. My dillo white requires cone 10. Does any one know what would happen if I only went to cone 5 with a glaze on a cone 10 clay? would the resaults be realy bad or just porse.? Will it crawl a lot or just alittle? I would be greatful for any help given. Thanks. Mary

You could use your cone five glazes on your cone 10 clay, and most likely you will not have crazing or crawling issues. The main thing to be aware of is that your cone 10 clay will not be fully vitrified, meaning it will remain somewhat porous. So it will be less functional. What kind of clay work do you? If you make sculpture or decorative vases or something like that, I wouldn't think twice in using the cone 5 glazes on cone 10 clay. If you make dishes your want to use, I would get cone 10 glaze and fire to cone 10. What do you plan on making?

Thank you Andy for your quick response. I kinda figured that. Is there any thing I can add to the cone 5 glaze to make it fit my cone 10 clay? I do alot of vases and some bowls and such. So maybe I'll give it a try on some of my vases. If I do cone 5 crystaline glaze, will this improve the quality of the clay because of the reduction faze, or cause more crawling or crazing? Thank you so much for your imput. Mary

There is no miracle raw material you can add to the cone 5 glaze. A crystalline glaze will give you the same result as what I stated above.
