Hi, I've just joined this site and wanted to ask a question about Terra Sigillata. I used 3 colors of terra sig, dark orange, white and black. For the black, I used the white terra sig with milled black iron oxide (I think!). The color of the black TS was a dark and very dark gray on bone dry clay. After bisqueing my piece, the white was white and the orange was very orange, but so was the black TS. Does anyone have experience with this? If I fire the piece in a cone 7 gas kiln, will the black TS turn dark or black? IF I put a clear glaze over the whole piece, will the black TS turn dark or black? I appreciate anyone's information! I'm glad to be part of this site and will post my experience with the terra sigs after firing.
Black iron oxide always will always be brownish-orange after being fired. Here is a link to some t-sig recipes http://www.claystation.com/forum/con...sigillata.html
It includes a black recipe, which is:
Black Terra Sigillata
800 grams hot water
200 grams Cedar Heights Red Art
10 grams black copper oxide
10 grams Manganese
10 grams Calgone*
Note: I prefer to color my sig after I have decanted the clay, Calgone* and water. This can also be colored with Mason 6600 stain instead of the Black copper oxide & manganese.
Thanks for your information, Andy, I believe I'm going to have to redo the black parts of my pot....Next time I'll use manganese also.
