Default Do you always fire clay?

Hi, I am new to working with clay. I just made a figurine,I plan on painting it. First what kind of paint is best and do I have to fire it after I paint it? It is red clay if that helps.
Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

without firing it will be very fragile. If you do not plan on glazing it you can use an acrylic paint on it after you have it fired.
