I have begun working with the majolica technique. while testing out several opaque white base glazes I have come across a potential problem. upon drying, two glazes are considerably softer than an Amaco white glaze product.
let me explain.
the Amaco product dries to a very hard surface. when applying the color stains with a brush the stains flow easily and the base glaze remains in place. perfect.
trying two dry mix glazes ( purchased from a clay company; it's their home batch and less expensive) when these base white glazes dry they are very soft and powdery.
I can apply the stains well enough, but the base glaze does lift off on the brush. I have to wipe it clean in order to not contaminate the stain with the dry white glaze.
help. is there something I can add to the dry mix that could 'harden' the glaze once applied.?
