JIM MALONE: new pots
Goldmark Gallery, Uppingham: 17 September – 15 October 2011
Goldmark Gallery is very pleased to announce the dates of the forthcoming, highly anticipated exhibition of new pots by Jim Malone. Somewhat of a maverick within his field, Malone’s nonconformist approach to life has echoed throughout his potting career, leading him to become one of the most important and respected British potters working today.
Under the auspicious tutelage of Ian Godfrey, Ewan Henderson and Colin Pearson at Camberwell School of Art in the early ‘70s, the Sheffield-born potter was further convinced of his calling when taken to see early Korean pots at the V&A. His inspiration garnered from Far Eastern pottery gained momentum after he graduated, and soon he was producing highly accomplished work with an emphatic personal stamp all of his own.
Immediately on finishing his First Class degree, Malone moved to North Wales, built a kiln, and set up his first workshop. He has now worked as a potter for more than 35 years, occasionally taking on residencies and lecturing posts. However, whilst always empathetic with his students, he found the hierarchies and politics of college life clashed with his individualistic and rebellious nature.
At 64, he now lives in Cumbria with his partner, enjoying an almost entirely self-sufficient way of life, revelling in the self-imposed isolation. He continues to produce exquisite work, from his flaring bowls decorated with hakame and iron brushwork, to Korean style bottles and jugs (regarded by many as the best in Britain) all fired in his two chambered oriental climbing kiln.
Expect to see striking combinations of Tenmoku jars and slab bottles with brilliant blue/green copper pours, elegant bottles with perfectly proportioned necks finished with a rich olive Nuka and yunomi; teabowls, ashed and incised or ridged and stamped. From very large bottles (some over 2ft high) to the smallest of yunomis, they all display the natural unforced beauty distinctive not only of Malone’s pots, but also of the landscape in which he makes them. That is, as Jim puts it, “so long as the kiln gods smile on me!”.
