Slow starting Cromartie kiln

I have an old Cromartie top loading kiln with a manual dial to turn the kiln up. The dial reads ' OFF 1 2 3 4 FULL'. I used to put the dial on 2 for a bisque firing and gradually turn the dial up to increase the temperature. However, I now need to put the dial straight on to 4 to get it going. It's taking longer to fire, too. Any ideas?
