Last weekend (19th-20th November) I participated in an open house exhibition with three other local Ballarat (Australia) artists. The idea harked back to the 1970s: taking art out of the white square box gallery context and placing it in a different environment to extend the meaning of the artworks. During the upheaval of the 70s this initiated the creation of various art movements that deviated from the mainstream, such as land art, performance art, minimalism and various other non-conformist “isms”.
The weekend aimed to create a different environment within the intimacy of the suburban house. Artworks were installed in gardens, window alcoves, coffee tables, kitchen walls, and NO WHITE PLINTHS WERE ALLOWED!! The artwork included sculpture : ceramic, mixed media and found objects; painting; drawing; and anything else the exhibiting artists deem suitable.
